Visions For The Future

October 30, 2009

Our visions are what we think could be done to help lower the car pollution, make car travel safer, and conserve natural resources. We are  putting these here because we think that some time in the future-maybe soon or maybe in a long time-they could happen. To learn more about us click here.

Sam’s Vision

October 29, 2009

My vision is that there will be human and solar powered bicycle-cars. The design would be similar to a velomobile. According to Wikipedia, “A velomobile or bicycle car is a human powered vehicle, enclosed for aerodynamic advantage and protection from weather and collisions”. What I would add to this design is it would have a solar powered motor to allow for longer distances or higher speeds. For short distances you would pedal in a way similar to using  a recumbent bike to conserve the solar energy. This would be useful if you had to drive on a cloudy day or during the day.

They would be solar powered because it is very energy efficient. The solar panels would be very powerful and would be on the very top of the velomobile. They would be small like a motorcycle because that would make the roads less crowded. The vehicle would still have a roof to protect the people inside the vehicle.

In the USA these would be used mostly for commuting but in other countries they could be used for more. The other good thing about these is that they would be more affordable for people all around the earth because it would take a lot less natural resources to make them compared to cars.

Cars kill about 30,000 people every year because of their emissions. In theory, if just 10% of people in the world had these vehicle it could save 3,000 lives. In theory, if 50% of people in the world had these vehicles it could save 15,000 lives. In 2002, 314,000,000 metric tons of Co2 were released from cars and trucks. In theory, if 50% of those people drove this vehicle instead that could stop 157,000,000 metric tons of Co2 going into the air. If we could do this we could save many lives and save our earth.

It might look similar to this, this is a velomobile.

My vision of how to make cars safer in the future would be to make kid safe air bags.  They would be smaller and less forceful than the adult versions, but would help protect the child’s head and body if there was a crash.   According to the World Health Organization in 2004 “1.2 million deaths and 10 million injuries occurred from car accidents”.  The air bags would help prevent many deaths and injuries.  The air bags would also be covered in a soft material so when it opens up it would protect, feel soft and be safe.

I think it is also important that people wear their seat belts.  Personally I have had a friend who was in a car crash and her seat belt saved her life.  Drive Alive reports that “seatbelts reduce the number of serious injuries sustained by 50% and reduces fatalities by 30 – 40%”.  So I think it is really important to have good seat belts.  My seat belts of the future would automatically buckle when you get in and be self locking in a crash but comfortable during other times.  They would form fit your body to fit your body size and you get to choose the color of your seat belt.  They would be connected to sensors around the car that would tighten the seat belt if they sense an accident might happen.

Cars of the future will be greener to help save our planet.  I would make cars greener by using recycled metals, solar power and wind power instead of gas, and a filter on the exhaust that would clean out the carbon dioxide and not pollute the air.  Understanding Nano.com has an idea about cleaning out carbon dioxide. They suggest using solutions in which the carbon dioxide is sent through an absorbing column which absorbs the carbon dioxide and cleans the exhaust and then sends carbon free exhaust back out into the air.

My vision is to use solar and wind powered planes for more efficient transportation. To be wind powered it could use a updraft to spin propellers. The propellers would then generate power to help fly the plane.  To be solar powered it would need lots of solar panels. The power the solar panels created would help keep the plane flying as well. Also the solar panels would create more energy and be more efficient because they are a lot closer to the sun. It would require alot of materials to make the planes and the solar panels but it would be more energy efficient. For more info click here.

This is a solar powered plane. It could be similar to this.

Tyler’s Vision

October 26, 2009

Hi, I’m Tyler and thing I’m most worried about is safety. To me this is important because if I had to decide whether to drive or to live, you would decide to live right? Plus, according to the World Health Organization, 1.2 million people die each year due to vehicle related accidents.

I think it would be cool if everyone had a sensor controlled vehicle  that the owner could tell the car where to go. The owner would input the place he or she wanted to go and then the car would drive there automatically. “A sensor is a device that measures a physical quantity and converts it into a signal which can be read by an observer or by an instrument” according to Wikipediea. It would be like an advanced GPS that would also be able to connect to the internet and upload a Google map to its sensors then find the fastest way to the destination. The sensor would also have technology that could sense  obstacles in their way and move out of the way plus the car could stop. People are already working on a car that uses echolocation that could progress into this.

I have an idea that it would cool if cars played the part of plants and trees along with the trees and plants. That their fuel is Carbon Dioxide and their exhaust is Oxygen. I wish that by 2050 we will live  on a planet free of smog. There are already cars that run on compressed air, why can’t we have cars that run on algae or something like that. There are cars that run on 85% ethanol. If cars can run on corn oil, why can’t cars run on weed oil. Can’t we use resources we don’t already need on for food or we aren’t running out of?

Nick’s Vision

In the future, I hope that object teleportation will be available.  This will allow objects to be transported very quickly.  Teleportation has already been done by a group of scientists on the Canary Islands who teleported a single atom from one Canary Island to another.  However, it will be a long time before we teleport someone like “Star Trek” The idea of quantum teleportation is when an atom is measured in its quantum state.  It is then obliterated and copied on another island.  Hopefully, by 2020 we will be able to teleport to the moon, but keep in mind that these are just atoms.

Here is a video I saw that explains what i was talking about
